(Phnom Penh): Cambodia deployed 184 engineering personnel, including around 30 women, to the Central African Republic on Tuesday (Sep. 8) to serve in a United Nations peacekeeping mission.

The personnel of Engineering Unit 864 departed from Techo International Airport after completing required health checks and specialised pre-deployment training.

The unit will replace 184 Cambodian peacekeepers from Engineering Unit 486, who completed their mission in the Central African Republic, carrying out duties including demining, unexploded ordnance clearance, and infrastructure construction.

The departure ceremony was presided over by Major General Sem Ratana, Acting Director General of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, who urged the personnel to uphold discipline, solidarity, and professionalism throughout their mission.

He also encouraged them to fulfil their duties responsibly and contribute to international peace and security while upholding Cambodia’s reputation on the global stage.

Over the past 20 years, Cambodia has deployed 10,726 peacekeepers, including 1,052 women, to UN missions across 10 countries. Currently, 473 Cambodian peacekeepers are serving on UN missions in South Sudan, Lebanon, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
