(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered an immediate halt to plans to dismantle the Coconut School located on Kirirom Mountain. He also pledged monthly financial support to ensure its continued operation.

Speaking at the 11th Nationwide Gathering with lay officiants (Achar and Acharini) at the National Institute of Education on Wednesday (Aug. 19), the prime minister said that he met with Coconut School founder Ouk Van Day on 18 August 2026 after learning about its impending closure.

He also commended Van Day’s dedication, integrity, and commitment to educating rural youth, noting that the institution has provided vital education to more than 150 local children since opening in 2017.

To protect the school, Samdech Thipadei instructed Military Region 3 and the Kampong Speu Military Operations Area to immediately suspend all demolition plans, maintain the existing site, and allow teachers and staff to continue living and teaching there without interruption.

Addressing land ownership rumours, the prime minister clarified that the school's land issue is unrelated to Oknha Choeung Sopheap, reiterating that the Royal Government will always support grassroots educational initiatives that directly benefit local communities.

He praised the Coconut School founder as an individual possessing a rare "wealth of heart," emphasising that morality, virtue, and selfless service earn public trust and respect that money cannot buy.
