(Phnom Penh): The Royal Government of Cambodia formally lodged another strong protest against Thailand’s continued violations of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity along the border, according to a press release seen by Fresh News on Tuesday (Aug. 11).

According to the press release, on 6 August 2026, Thai armed forces continued to construct new military bunkers, encroaching upon Cambodian territory in the area of the Thmor Da International Border Checkpoint, Thmor Da Commune, Veal Veng District, Pursat Province.

Furthermore, on 7 August 2026, the Royal Thai Government announced a plan to extend Thailand’s national power grid to the areas of Ta Krabey Temple and Hill 333. These activities amount to attempt to the consolidation of Thailand’s unlawful occupation of Cambodian territory, in violation of Thailand’s obligations under existing bilateral treaties and agreements on the demarcation of the land boundary with Cambodia.

The Royal Government of Cambodia strongly protested against the persistent and expansive encroachment by the Thai armed forces and reiterated its firm position that the above-mentioned areas are situated entirely within the sovereign territory of Cambodia as defined and delimited by the 1/200,000-scale maps produced by the Commissions of Delimitation of the Boundary between Indo-China and Siam, pursuant to the Franco-Siamese Convention of 1904 and the Treaty of 1907.

The press release added that the above-mentioned activities are in breach of Article 5 of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand on the Survey and Demarcation of the Land Boundary (MOU 2000), signed on 14 June 2000, as well as of Item 1 (De-escalation Measures) of the Joint Statement of the 3rd Special Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on 27 December 2025.

The Royal Government of Cambodia re-emphasised that it does not accept any boundary line or territorial claim unilaterally asserted by Thailand, and that the above-mentioned activities shall not prejudice the legal rights or position of the Kingdom of Cambodia with respect to its international boundary.

Cambodia urged Thailand to immediately cease such activities in the above-mentioned areas, as well as any other areas unlawfully occupied by Thai armed forces since last year, with a view to de-escalating the situation, fostering mutual trust, facilitating peaceful settlement of disputes, thereby restoring peace, stability and good-neighbourly relations along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Cambodia remains committed to resolving all boundary disputes with Thailand, as with all its neighbours, exclusively through peaceful means, in line with international law and existing bilateral agreements, while firmly upholding its principled position that borderlines must not be changed by force.
