(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn underscored that peace is a daily choice, requiring continuous effort, deliberate restraint, inclusive dialogue and unwavering adherence to the rule of law.

In a message commemorating the 59th Anniversary of ASEAN dated 7 August 2026, Prak Sokhonn recalled remarks by Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Theresa Lazaro during the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC).

“Peace is fragile. It is not a condition that we simply inherit,” Lazaro said.

Prak Sokhonn said the message carries particular significance as Southeast Asia navigates an increasingly uncertain global environment marked by renewed armed conflicts, intensifying geopolitical tensions, and growing pressure on international law and multilateralism.

The minister underscored that the relevance of TAC rests on the ASEAN’s commitment to its foundational principles, including mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference, peaceful settlement of disputes, the renunciation of the threat or use of force, and effective cooperation across all domains.

Addressing the ongoing situation along the border, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn stated that the border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand, therefore, cannot be regarded solely as a bilateral issue. “It also concerns ASEAN, as it bears directly on the fundamental principles enshrined in both the ASEAN Charter and the TAC."

The foreign minister reiterated Cambodia's call for the immediate, full and effective implementation, in its entirety, of the Joint Statement of 27 December 2025, particularly the prompt resumption of the survey and demarcation work of the Joint Boundary Commission, and the return of the displaced civilians to their homes and normal livelihoods without obstruction, in safety and dignity, at the earliest opportunity.
