(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn underlined that ASEAN's future must be shaped collectively, stating that the bloc's success depends not only on governments but also on the active participation of businesses, academia, civil society, youth, and local communities.

In his message commemorating the 59th Anniversary of ASEAN dated 7 August 2026, Prak Sokhonn said the regional bloc must remain proactive and adaptable amid growing global uncertainty.

“In this uncertain environment, ASEAN cannot afford to be passive,” the foreign minister said. “We must not merely respond to change; we must help shape it.”

He underscored that ASEAN unity and centrality remain indispensable, stressing that the bloc's central role must be demonstrated through greater coherence, responsiveness, and the ability to uphold its principles while delivering meaningful results for its people.

Reaffirming Cambodia’s active diplomatic role, Minister Prak Sokhonn said the kingdom is proud to have been an ASEAN member since 1999 and remains firmly committed to strengthening the bloc's unity, resilience, and relevance.

He added that Cambodia would continue to uphold the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in both principle and practice.

The foreign minister also called for broader participation across society, urging stakeholders to strengthen a shared ASEAN identity and deepen their collective responsibility for the region's future.

“ASEAN's future is ours to define,” he said, stressing that governments alone cannot achieve the bloc's long-term ambitions.

Looking ahead as ASEAN marks the 50th anniversary of the TAC, Prak Sokhonn urged member states to translate the treaty's enduring principles into practical action to ensure future generations inherit a Southeast Asia that remains peaceful, confident in its identity, and capable of shaping its own destiny.
