(Pursat): Cambodian authorities and residents have raised concerns over illegal activities by Thai troops along the Thma Da border area in Veal Veng District, Pursat Province, saying the actions have heightened tensions and caused anxiety among local communities.
According to local resident Yung Rem of Sangkum Thmei Village, Thai troops have placed shipping containers, installed barbed wire, and raised the Thai national flag in Cambodia's territory in the Chramoh Chruk area of Thma Da.
She added that Thai soldiers have also scattered powder and nails and released smoke from shipping containers positioned in the disputed area, prompting fears among Cambodian residents living and traveling near the border.
Residents said the repeated incidents have disrupted daily life and raised concerns over public health and safety, with the scattered powder, nails, and smoke creating unease in the community.
The Cambodian government said it is closely monitoring the situation and called on the Thai side to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions or undermine the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.
Maintaining peace, stability, and mutual respect along the shared border is essential to the prosperity of both nations. All outstanding issues should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law. Continued tensions could affect both border communities and broader Cambodia–Thailand relations.
