(Geneva): Cambodia joined representatives from more than 170 countries and international organisations at the Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance to help shape the future of global AI regulation.
Held on Monday (Jul. 6), the UN-led event brought together heads of state, government leaders, digital ministers, and around 4,000 participants to discuss the opportunities and risks posed by artificial intelligence.
At the invitation of UN Secretary General António Guterres, Minister of Post and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth represented Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the high-level dialogue, co-chaired by representatives of El Salvador and Estonia.
An independent UN scientific panel of 40 international experts warned that AI is advancing faster than the governance systems designed to regulate it and that AI capabilities remain concentrated in only a handful of countries despite their global impact. The panel urged UN member states to take timely political action to ensure AI development benefits humanity.
Representing Cambodia, Minister Chea Vandeth outlined five priorities for AI governance: promoting innovation while expanding access and public trust; adopting proactive, forward-looking regulation; implementing ASEAN's principles-based governance model with participation from the private sector, academia, civil society, and citizens; strengthening international cooperation on regulatory capacity, information sharing, and AI incident monitoring; and encouraging global technology companies to work closely with governments to support effective AI governance.
