(Phnom Penh): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodian Senate President, sent a letter of condolence to President of the National Parliament of Timor-Leste Maria Fernanda Lay following the passing of former President of Timor-Leste Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo, who died on 21 June 2026.
"I wish to express my most sincere condolences to the entire nation of Timor-Leste," Samdech Techo Hun Sen wrote.
“Francisco Guterres Lú- Olo was a leader of profound dignity and genuine warmth, whose life was inextricably bound to the historic journey of Timor- Leste. He devoted his life to securing national peace, developing his country, building close ties with its neighbouring countries, and pushing for its accession to ASEAN. The bond between Cambodia and Timor-Leste blossomed during his tenure into a meaningful partnership united by a common history of post-conflict reconstruction,” Samdech Techo underlined.
“It was a profound honour to work closely with him and witness firsthand his humility, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to his people,” he added.
The Cambodian Senate president noted that the late leader's remarkable spirit would always be cherished by the people of Timor-Leste and that he would be greatly missed by all who had known and worked with him.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen concluded by extending his thoughts and prayers to the people of Timor-Leste, especially the bereaved family, expressing hope that the late former president's soul would rest in peace.
