(Phnom Penh): Cambodia’s National Assembly approved a draft amendment to Cambodia’s Law on Roads during an extraordinary session of its 7th Legislature on Monday (Jun. 22), chaired by National Assembly President Khuon Sudary.
The draft law was presented by Minister of Public Works and Transport Peng Ponea and will now be forwarded to the Senate for consideration.
The draft amendment to the Law on Roads has been identified as a priority task under the Pentagonal Strategy – Phase 1, particularly under point 4 of the second pentagon’s second angle, which calls for reviewing and revising road regulations to respond to private sector requests and support socio-economic development.
Key changes include revised maximum vehicle weight limits and updated administrative penalties for overloaded vehicles. The reforms are expected to lower transportation and logistics costs, enhance Cambodia’s competitiveness, and better protect road infrastructure from damage caused by overloading.
The amendments also seek to strengthen transparency and fairness in law enforcement through clearer legal provisions and penalties aligned with current conditions. In addition, the updated framework is expected to boost investor confidence by reflecting advances in vehicle technology and evolving economic needs.
