(Phnom Penh): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State, on Tuesday warned that any attempt to remove the Hun family from leadership amounts to an effort to overthrow Cambodia’s legitimate government.

Addressing from the new General Department of Taxation headquarters, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that the government derives its legitimacy from the people through elections and will firmly defend the constitutional order.

He also rejected claims that the opposition-linked Sam family could take power if the Hun family were no longer leading the country.

“Even if the Hun family is no longer in power, it will not be the Sam family’s turn,” he said, adding that future leaders would come from within the Cambodian People’s Party.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen reiterated his respect for peaceful political competition conducted within the Constitution, while warning that authorities would take decisive action against extremist groups seeking to destabilise the government.
