(Tokyo): Chum Sounry, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Cambodia to Japan, held a meeting with Shimada Tomoaki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in Tokyo, according to a press release seen by Fresh News on Thursday (May 28).
During the meeting, both sides highly valued the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and Japan, which has continued to deepen across a broad range of sectors since the elevation of bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2023.
Ambassador Sounry highlighted the steady progress in bilateral relations, including high-level exchanges, infrastructure and connectivity, trade and investment, security and defence cooperation, mine action and humanitarian assistance, people-to-people exchanges, as well as regional and international cooperation.
The ambassador expressed appreciation for Japan's continued support for Cambodia's socio-economic development and welcomed the launch of the Japan-Cambodia Economic Co-Creation Package in May 2025 as an important framework for further advancing economic cooperation between the two countries.
He reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia's commitment to translating both the Cambodia-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Economic Co-Creation Package into tangible outcomes for the mutual benefit of the peoples of Cambodia and Japan.
The two sides discussed the cooperation in combating online scams and transnational organised crime. In this regard, Ambassador Sounry reiterated the firm commitment of the Royal Government to combating online scams and all forms of transnational organised crime through strengthened law enforcement cooperation and regional collaboration.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional developments, during which Ambassador Sounry conveyed Cambodia's appreciation for Japan's support for the peaceful settlement of the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, the implementation of the ceasefire, and the provision of humanitarian assistance to displaced persons.
He reaffirmed the Royal Government’s commitment to emphasising the full, effective, and good-faith implementation of all existing agreements, with a view to achieving lasting peace and stability along the border.
The two sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening cooperation and partnership within both bilateral and regional frameworks for the promotion of peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region.
