(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed that the Cambodia–Thailand border issue remains a key national priority during a courtesy meeting with outgoing Swiss Ambassador Pedro Zwahlen at the Peace Palace on Tuesday (May 26).
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to resolving the dispute peacefully and in accordance with international law, as well as existing conventions, treaties, and agreements between Cambodia and Thailand.
In response, Ambassador Zwahlen conveyed Switzerland’s support for maintaining the ceasefire and endorsed efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement based on international law and the principles of a rules-based international order.
Despite a trilateral meeting involving Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines during the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebuearlier this month, little progress has been made on the border issue.
The prime minister’s remarks come amid continued tensions along the border, including recent allegations by Thai authorities over cross-border gunfire, claims that Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence firmly denied.
