(Phnom Penh): Minister of Post and Telecommunications Chea Vandeth said Cambodia’s future will be shaped not by technology alone, but by people who know how to use it wisely, as he addressed graduates at the 10th commencement ceremony of the American University of Phnom Penh on Saturday (May 9).
Speaking to the Class of 2026, the minister highlighted the growing importance of education, innovation, and ethical leadership in an era driven by digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
“You are graduating at a defining moment,” he said. “We are entering an era shaped by digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and data-driven systems.”
Chea Vandeth stressed that technology has become a driving force across all sectors and noted that Cambodia has identified digital technology as one of the country’s key national development priorities.
The minister stressed that universities now play a broader role beyond traditional education, describing them as drivers of human capital, innovation, and digital capability.
Chea Vandeth highlighted AUPP’s contribution to preparing Cambodian youth for global opportunities through international internships, exchange programs, and industry-linked learning initiatives. He pointed to the Japanese IT Pathway Program as an example of efforts to connect Cambodian talent with advanced digital economies.
In addition, he commended the launch of the AUPP Alumni App, developed by students, and the university’s inaugural Founder’s Leadership Excellence Award.
Encouraging graduates to become active contributors to society, Minister Chea Vandeth urged them to use technology responsibly and create solutions that generate meaningful value.
“In a digital world, trust is the most important currency,” he said.
Concluding his remarks, Minister Chea Vandeth said Cambodia’s future will depend on citizens capable of aligning innovation with national values and courageous leadership.
“The future of Cambodia will not be determined by technology alone, but by the people who know how to use it wisely,” he said. “It will not be shaped by those who wait for change, but by those who have the courage to lead it.”
