(Phnom Penh): The Constitutional Council of Cambodia expresses its full support for the decision of the Royal Government to initiate a compulsory conciliation mechanism under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) concerning the area of overlapping maritime claims in the Cambodia-Thailand gulf, according to the statement seen by Fresh News on Thursday (May 7).

Article 2 of the Constitution of Cambodia clearly stipulates that the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Cambodia shall be absolutely inviolable within its borders as defined on internationally recognized maps.

Therefore, the adoption of international legal mechanisms in border resolution reflects a firm commitment to peace, dialogue, the rule of law, and the peaceful settlement of disputes under international laws and rules, as consistently advocated by the international community.

The Constitutional Council of Cambodia strongly supports and has full confidence in the Royal Government in its continued efforts to uphold the Constitution, to achieve a border resolution, to protect territorial integrity, and to defend the nation and the homeland, based on the principles of pacifism and peaceful resolution under existing national and international legal mechanisms.
