(Phnom Penh): Cambodia and Russia celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations with a friendly football match in Phnom Penh on 30 April 2026, highlighting the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The event was presided over by Meas Kim Heng, Secretary of State at Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Anatoly Borovik, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Cambodia.
The match, held at Sephora Sport Centre in Phnom Penh ahead of the official anniversary on May 13, featured teams from the Cambodian Foreign Ministry and the Russian Embassy. Ambassador Borovik and Secretary of State Meas Kim Heng jointly kicked off the game.
In their opening remarks, both officials underscored the strong ties built on mutual respect, trust, and a shared commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity. They also praised the steady progress in bilateral cooperation over the past seven decades, particularly in education, trade, tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and multilateral collaboration.
“Throughout this significant period of history, Moscow and Phnom Penh have achieved considerable success in developing bilateral cooperation based on friendship, mutual trust, and readiness to assist each other in difficult times,” Ambassador Borovik said. “It is our duty to preserve and expand this rich legacy.”
Families, colleagues, and friends gathered to cheer on the players as the match unfolded in a warm and lively atmosphere.
The football event continued a growing tradition of informal sporting exchanges between Russian and Cambodian diplomats. The previous friendly match was held at the Russian Embassy to mark Diplomats’ Day.
