(Sihanoukville): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced a significant enhancement in the handling capacity of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, located in Preah Sihanouk Province, speaking on Friday (May 1) during a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of Japan’s cooperation with Sihanoukville Autonomous Port.
Over the past two years, this capacity has expanded from 550,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to an impressive 1.3 million TEUs annually.
During the ceremony, Samdech Thipadei highlighted the remarkable year-on-year growth in cargo throughput at the port, emphasising the importance of continued development and modernisation efforts.
Samdech Thipadei called for continued modernization and closer collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), focusing on several priorities:
- Advancing Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the deep-sea container terminal project
- Developing a master plan to position the port as a regional logistics hub
- Improving domestic transport connectivity
- Accelerating digital transformation toward an “E-Port”
On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also stressed the need for institutional reform and human capital development to boost productivity, service quality, and operational efficiency. He urged a comprehensive review of workforce needs, organizational structure, and the adoption of modern human resource and information technology systems.
According to Fresh AI, the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Cambodia's sole international deep-sea port, remains a key economic gateway supporting industry, trade, and tourism. In the first quarter of 2026, cargo throughput rose 38% year-on-year, with total capacity exceeding 1.34 million TEUs.
The Royal Government aims to transform the port into a regional hub, supported by ongoing expansion projects. Phase 1 of the new terminal, backed by JICA, is currently 66.7% complete and is expected to be finished by early 2027. Once operational, it will raise capacity to 1.45 million TEUs and enable direct international shipping routes.
