(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet ordered the strictest possible measures against violent youth groups, stressing zero tolerance following recent attacks on law enforcement officers.

The premier spoke on Sunday (Apr. 26) during his meeting with informal economy, trade unions and associations at Diamond Island Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh.

“In cases where violent youths confront authorities and injure officers, action must be decisive,” he said. “Law enforcement must carry out their duties without fear. Those who attack officers will face the most severe penalties without exception.”

He also emphasized the need to strengthen legal protections for police and ensure they have sufficient authority to perform their duties effectively.

The directive follows a serious incident on April 24 in Stung Trang district, Kampong Cham, where a police officer was critically injured while intervening in a fight at a Kun Khmer boxing event.

Lieutenant Colonel Map Sophat, Deputy Inspector in charge of anti-drug operations, was attacked with a sharp metal object, suffering multiple facial injuries and a brain haemorrhage. He remains unconscious and is being transferred to Viet Nam for advanced medical treatment.
