(Phnom Penh): Cuba reaffirmed its commitment to deepening diplomatic relations, solidarity, and cooperation with Cambodia amid ongoing global challenges.

Speaking on Tuesday (Apr. 21) at the Ministry of Information, Cuban Ambassador Milena Caridad Zaldivar Piedra highlighted the strong and enduring partnership between the two nations during a photo exhibition marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations (15 April 1960 – 15 April 2026).

The exhibition, featuring 31 images, showcased key milestones reflecting decades of trust, mutual respect, and shared commitment to peace, justice, and international law.

Ambassador Zaldivar Piedra emphasised that over the past 65 years, Cuba and Cambodia have cultivated a special, enduring relationship founded on shared principles, mutual respect, understanding, and a joint commitment to peace and justice in accordance with international law. She expressed the Cuban people's profound gratitude to Cambodia for its steadfast support in defending Cuba's sovereignty and independence.

The ambassador further noted that both nations have consistently upheld strong cooperation within significant multilateral frameworks, guided by principles such as self-determination, respect for territorial integrity, peaceful conflict resolution, non-use of force, non-interference, and the promotion and protection of human rights and culture. The milestones and significant events showcased in the exhibition reflect the deep trust and lasting partnership forged between the two countries.

She reiterated Cuba's commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations, solidarity, and collaboration with Cambodia during these challenging times on the global stage. The ambassador expressed her readiness to deepen cooperation and expand partnerships across trade, tourism, investment, education, and medical training programs. Furthermore, the Cuban government aspires to enhance cultural ties as a vital foundation for bringing the two nations closer together.

Ambassador Zaldivar Piedra called upon the youth of both countries to continue fostering bilateral relations and to uphold the values of friendship and solidarity as they strive towards a prosperous future.

On the Cambodian side, Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra highlighted growing collaboration in the information sector, including exchanges, cultural promotion, and journalist training.

Minister Neth Pheaktra noted that a 2022 Memorandum of Understanding between Cambodia’s AKP News Agency and Cuba’s Prensa Latina has enhanced news sharing and mutual understanding of political, economic, and social developments. This cooperation serves not only as a means of information sharing but also as a bridge to strengthen friendship and mutual understanding between the two nations.

He reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with Cuba for the mutual benefit of both peoples, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by cross-border misinformation amid the rapid advancements in digital and artificial intelligence technologies.
