(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet received a courtesy call and had a discussion with Christian DesRoches, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada to Cambodia, at the Peace Palace on Monday (Apr. 20).

During the meeting, Ambassador DesRoches expressed high regard for the enduring diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Canada, emphasising the steady advancement of bilateral ties, particularly in trade and Canadian investment in Cambodia.

He reiterated Canada’s commitment to further enhance and broaden cooperation between the two nations, with a focus on trade and economic development.

Additionally, the ambassador expressed Canada’s unwavering support for Cambodia in its role as host of the forthcoming 20th Francophonie Summit, exhibiting confidence in its successful execution.

He also confirmed that a high-level delegation from Canada would be in attendance.

Furthermore, he expressed gratitude to Cambodia for its contributions to strengthening the economic partnership between Canada and ASEAN, and for its participation in the negotiations of the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA), anticipating its conclusion and signing in due course.

In response, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet extended his congratulations to the ambassador on his appointment to Cambodia, expressing confidence that under his diplomatic tenure, bilateral relations and cooperation would continue to prosper and deepen.

He also acknowledged Canada’s notable contributions to Cambodia’s peace process, socioeconomic rehabilitation, and development efforts.

The prime minister underlined the positive trajectory of their bilateral ties and the robust potential for expanded collaboration. He stressed the essential role and aspirations of the Cambodian community in Canada, particularly in fostering connections and promoting trade and economic relations between Cambodia and Canada.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet indicated that the Royal Government of Cambodia has directed the Ministry of Commerce and the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce to establish a representative office in Canada. This office will serve as a conduit to enhance economic cooperation and explore new avenues for bolstering bilateral trade and investment.

He reiterated the government’s readiness to persist in strengthening and expanding cooperation between Cambodia and Canada on bilateral and international fronts.

Both sides discussed promoting cooperation across several critical domains, including trade, investment and economic development, national defence and security, and combating transnational crime.
