(Phnom Penh): Dor Samphors, Spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration, stated that during the recent three-day celebration of the traditional Khmer New Year and the "Nokor Sangkranta" event, more than 4.3 million people, including domestic and international visitors, joined Khmer New Year celebrations in Phnom Penh, creating a vibrant atmosphere of joy, unity, and harmony in a safe and peaceful setting.
The spokesperson reported on Friday (Apr. 17) that six major venues, including the former Phnom Penh International Airport site, drew large crowds for traditional games and festive activities. Celebrations also extended to pagodas and all 14 districts across the capital.
Attendance rose steadily throughout the festival. On April 14, the city recorded 983,080 visitors, including 7,068 foreign tourists. The number increased to 1,565,367 on April 15, with 17,940 international visitors. The final day saw the highest turnout, reaching 1,827,990 participants.
Dor Samphors highlighted the success of the “Nokor Sangkranta” event, noting its warm and festive atmosphere. Strong coordination and effective security measures ensured public order and safety, allowing people to celebrate without major incidents.
Lieutenant General Chuon Narin, Deputy Commissioner General of the National Police and Chief of the Phnom Penh Municipal Police, confirmed that security was maintained throughout the three-day event, with no significant incidents reported due to the continuous deployment of forces.
The "Nokor Sangkranta" celebrations in Phnom Penh will continue for six days from 14-19 April 2026. The event is jointly organised by the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia and the Phnom Penh Capital Administration.
