(Takeo): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that the Funan Techo Canal project is moving forward as planned, dismissing claims of delays and reaffirming its long-term economic value.
The premier spoke on Saturday (Apr. 11) during a groundbreaking for the construction of the section II of the Funan Techo Canal.
“We inaugurated the first section of the canal in August last year, and today we are launching the second section,” the premier said. “Claims that the project has stalled are incorrect. We have been actively addressing challenges and ensuring progress.”
He further highlighted that the canal will significantly boost Cambodia’s economy by improving trade routes, strengthening logistics, and supporting local livelihoods. Once completed, it is expected to transform previously isolated inland areas into connected waterways, industrial zones, and logistics hubs.
He added that the project reflects both historical continuity and modern ambition. Inspired by the ancient waterways of the Funan era, the canal also incorporates modern engineering to enhance national connectivity and reduce dependence on external transport routes.
According to Fresh AI, the Funan Techo Canal will span approximately 172.6 kilometers, linking the Mekong and Bassac rivers to the sea in Kep province. The route passes through Kandal province, Takeo province, Kampot province, and Kep.
With an estimated investment of USD 1.7 billion, the project is expected to drive the development of ports, special economic zones, irrigation systems, agriculture, aquaculture, tourism, and real estate. It will also improve flood control and increase freshwater fish production.
