(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth called on citizens to exercise heightened caution amid ongoing extreme heat, warning against burning waste or engaging in activities that could spark fires.

The alert comes as a global heatwave pushes temperatures above 40°C. In Cambodia, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology reports rapidly rising temperatures across lowland plains, flat regions, and coastal areas.

The minister emphasized that extreme heat significantly heightens fire hazards, which can lead to property damage, environmental destruction, and worsening air pollution. He called on citizens, as well as factory and business owners, to remain vigilant over equipment and activities that may pose fire risks.

Citizens are strongly advised to avoid burning waste or forests, as such actions could quickly spread fires into residential areas. The minister also urged collective responsibility in preventing fire incidents to protect communities and the environment.
