(Phnom Penh): Under the "China-Aided Cambodia Landmine Elimination Project," Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) cleared more than 19,000 hectares of minefields and explosive remnants of war (ERW) between 2018 and Feb. 28, 2026.
The progress was highlighted by CMAC Director Heng Ratana during a courtesy meeting with Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenbin at the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh.
During the meeting, the CMAC director informed the ambassador about the progress of mine clearance operations and explosive remnants of war (ERW) achieved by CMAC. He noted that the “China-Aided Cambodia Landmine Elimination Project” has delivered significant results, supported by Chinese funding, technical equipment, and expertise, which have improved the safety and efficiency of clearance operations.
According to CMAC, the project has led to the destruction of over 105,000 landmines and unexploded ordnance, responded to more than 5,900 emergency requests, and provided mine risk education to over 4.6 million people. In total, more than 378,000 families, equivalent to over 1.45 million people, have benefited directly and indirectly.
In response, Ambassador Wang Wenbin highly valued Cambodia’s achievements in maintaining peace and implementing mine action policies. He added that Cambodia has achieved brilliant results in ensuring safety and socio-economic development, as well as sharing its experiences with others.
The ambassador also confirmed China's firm stance and readiness to continue providing grants and support for humanitarian mine/ERW operations to Cambodia. This support aims to accelerate clearance operations to meet set goals, emphasizing that the Chinese side will continue to stand with Cambodia in addressing the issue of explosive remnants of war for the safety of the people and sustainable development.
On the occasion, the CMAC director also expressed his deepest gratitude to the government and people of China for their consistent support in spirit, technical equipment, and funding. These are essential factors that enable CMAC to expand the scope of its operations more broadly and effectively, contributing to the further development and progress of the country.
