(Svay Rieng): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet underlined that effective prevention of online scams is essential to maintaining security and sustaining industrial growth, particularly in key economic zones like Svay Rieng.
The premier spoke on Thursday (Mar. 26) during an inauguration of the Andong Tasey Water Treatment Plant in Svay Rieng province.
He commended the Svay Rieng provincial administration for its proactive measures in combating online scams and urged continued efforts to uphold safety, security, and order for both citizens and investors.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet highlighted that ensuring safety and security is paramount for attracting investors and fostering industrial development. He noted that online scams are a regional challenge, requiring sustained prevention and strict enforcement to safeguard Cambodia’s reputation.
The prime minister also confirmed intensified law enforcement operations in Svay Rieng, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects, mostly foreign nationals, and the seizure of related evidence. Authorities have called on owners of casinos, apartments, and guesthouses to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities and denying accommodation to potential offenders.
According to the Ministry of Interior, between 1 January and 14 March 2026, authorities conducted operations at 98 locations nationwide, including in Phnom Penh, Kampot, Svay Rieng, and other provinces.
These operations resulted in 5,771 arrests involving 23 nationalities. Of those, 4,407 individuals were referred to immigration authorities, 127 sent to court, 342 released, and 895 remain under investigation.
