(Phnom Penh): On 20 March 2026, the American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP) convened an inspiring panel discussion on “Leadership Excellence: Lessons from 250 Years of American Higher Education,” bringing together prominent speakers and nearly 200 participants.
The event featured Mrs. Bridgette Walker, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Cambodia, alongside academic leaders and institutional partners.
In opening remarks, AUPP Interim President Dr. Matthew Schenk highlighted the significance of the milestone, emphasizing the transformative power of American-style education in Cambodia. “We gather to celebrate 250 years of American history, innovation, and leadership. AUPP was founded on the belief that this model of education can transform lives here in Cambodia,” he said.
Mrs. Walker underscored the global reputation of U.S. higher education, noting its strength in academic quality, advanced research, and English-language immersion that enhances career prospects.
“Cambodia is a country of youth, with approximately 65 percent of the population under the age of 35. Cambodian youth, like their peers around the world, are increasingly connected-both to each other and to the global community,” she added.
According to Mrs. Bridgette Walker, since 2012, the number of Cambodian students attending U.S. colleges and universities has steadily increased. In 2025 alone, she noted a remarkable 20.5% rise in Cambodian student enrollment in the United States.
Mrs. Walker also highlighted ongoing collaboration between U.S. and Cambodian institutions, including partnerships involving AUPP, the University of Arizona (UA), and Fort Hays State University (FHSU), which expand access to international education.
The panel also featured Dr. Jeni McRay, Assistant Provost of Internationalization and Strategic Initiatives at Fort Hays State University, who traced the evolution of American higher education and its challenges, and Mr. Sonan Seth, Cambodia-based representative of the University of Arizona, who shared personal academic experiences and insights on contributing to local development.
Discussions focused on leadership, global collaboration, and the role of higher education in shaping Cambodia’s next generation.
The event forms part of broader celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American higher education in 2026, reflecting its long-standing global influence in research, innovation, and leadership development.
