(Phnom Penh): Cambodia's Ministry of Information launched the "Zero Fake News" campaign project with support from the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund on Thursday (Mar. 12).

Speaking at the launch ceremony in Phnom Penh, Information Minister Neth Pheaktra said stakeholders from Laos, Viet Nam, Myanmar, and China would be invited to participate in this campaign, aiming to eliminate fake news in Cambodia and other LMC countries.

The minister said that eliminating fake news was crucial to maintaining peace, political stability, security, and social order.

"The media is playing a more important role than ever in providing accurate information to the public and should be used as a bridge between people in the region and in the world for common peace and shared prosperity," the minister said.

He added that the campaign was expected to raise awareness among people in Cambodia and across the region about the dangers and impacts of fake news, encouraging them to join in preventing it both within their countries and across borders. The LMC countries include China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

Initiated by China in March 2016, the LMC Special Fund aimed to support small- and medium-sized cooperation projects proposed by the six LMC countries.
