(Phnom Penh): Pich Chanmony, Cambodia’s First Lady, presided over the event titled “Walk for Lasting Peace for All of Us”, as part of activities marking the 115th anniversary of International Women’s Day.
The walking event began in front of Wat Botum Vatey and proceeded to Wat Phnom in Phnom Penh, drawing approximately 1,700 participants.
During the opening ceremony, Pich Chanmony highlighted the vital role of women in society, noting that many women are mothers and wives of frontline soldiers who sometimes face the pain of losing family members in service to the nation.
She underlined that Cambodian women play an active role in economic development across both the public and private sectors, as well as within communities and families. Women help strengthen community solidarity and represent a valuable human resource that contributes significantly to national development.
Within families, she added, women nurture warmth and stability, encourage family members during difficult times, and teach younger generations the values of love, understanding, and kindness.
On the occasion, Pich Chanmony underlined that Cambodia has highly valued women and has celebrated International Women’s Day since 1977, recognising women’s contributions and their struggle for rights, freedom, and equality.
Cambodia has also made notable international recognition for its contributions to peacekeeping, ranking 13th among 118 countries globally and second within ASEAN for deploying female peacekeepers. The country has also emerged as a regional leader in advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda, promoting greater participation of women in peacebuilding and security efforts.
