(Phnom Penh): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State, warned against remarks that could threaten Cambodian citizens and undermine religious harmony following comments made by The Kanitha Show, suggesting that the United States might arrest Cambodian Muslims in Cambodia who practice Islam in the Iranian style.
In a message posted on social media on Wednesday (Mar. 11), Samdech Techo said the statement carried the nature of a threat against citizens of a sovereign state, something he noted even the US government itself might not say.
“I should not have been involved in this matter. However, if I did not intervene to stop it, the issue could escalate because what Kanitha [The Kanitha Show] said resembles a threat against the citizens of a sovereign state,” he wrote.
Samdech Techo warned that such remarks could also create division among Islamic sects and between different religions in Cambodia.
“What is frightening is armed war, but what is even more frightening is religious war,” Samdech Techo added.
Samdech Techo continued that during his more than 47 years in leadership, he has consistently worked to promote ethnic and religious harmony to ensure that Cambodia remains free from ethnic and religious conflict.
