(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet instructed provincial and municipal governors to prohibit the use of water trucks and water guns during the upcoming Khmer New Year celebrations, while encouraging the promotion of traditional Khmer games.
The premier spoke on Friday (Mar. 6) during the closing ceremony of the National Authority for Combating Drugs’ annual conference at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.
At the ceremony, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said he supports the organization of Sangkranta events to celebrate the Khmer traditional New Year but advised local authorities to avoid activities such as water trucks, water guns, and powder throwing.
“Water trucks should be reserved for firefighting and emergency response,” the prime minister said, noting that water spraying was not traditionally part of Khmer New Year celebrations.
He encouraged provinces to use the occasion to revive traditional Khmer games and organize cultural activities that allow citizens to celebrate together.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet also noted that the upcoming Khmer New Year celebrations will serve as an opportunity for people to show support for displaced communities and frontline soldiers, emphasizing that national celebrations demonstrate Cambodia’s unity, resilience, and determination to move forward together.
