(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that the former Phnom Penh International Airport will be temporarily opened to the public during the upcoming Khmer New Year for leisure, walking, exercise, and community activities.
The premier spoke on Friday (Mar. 6) during the closing ceremony of the National Authority for Combating Drugs’ annual conference at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel.
Samdech Thipadei said he had instructed the committee managing the airport site to prepare the area so citizens can use it for sports and recreational activities during the holiday, particularly for Phnom Penh residents who remain in the capital.
“The site has already been prepared as a reserve area and can be used for exercise and other activities during the New Year,” the prime minister said.
He noted that the government plans to gradually transform the former airport site into a public recreational space now that it is no longer used for flight operations, offering a spacious and safe environment for families and young people.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet also confirmed that Khmer New Year celebrations will take place from 14–19 April 2026, with events such as Nokor Sangkranta organized to promote relaxation and national unity while remembering soldiers and displaced people.
It should be noted that Phnom Penh International Airport, commonly known as Pochentong International Airport, ceased flight operations at midnight on 8–9 September 2025 following the opening of Techo International Airport, located about 30–40 kilometres south of Phnom Penh. All flights have since been transferred to the new facility to expand passenger capacity and support Cambodia’s aviation sector.
