(Phnom Penh): On 20 February 2026, the Embassy of India, in collaboration with the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), hosted an event titled “Promoting Tourism & Travel Related Trade Between India & Cambodia.” The event brought together government officials and key travel industry stakeholders to explore opportunities for enhancing two-way tourism flows, with a special focus on the Buddhist Circuit.

To enhance the visitor experience, Indian officials also unveiled plans to establish “ASEAN Food Courts” at key sites, offering Southeast Asian cuisine to ensure cultural comfort for regional pilgrims.

Indian Ambassador to Cambodia Vanlalvawna Bawitlung noted that despite strong historical and religious connections, tourism flows remain below their true potential.

“The current timing is ideal for both governments and the private sector to prepare a joint roadmap,” he said, urging modernisation of travel facilitation systems, infrastructure upgrades, and stronger transport connectivity to ensure every traveller receives a warm and respectful welcome.

According to an official data, 11,326 Cambodians travelled to India in 2024, a staggering 38 percent increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, approximately 80,000 Indian tourists visited Cambodia in 2024, with strong growth projected through 2026.

The surge is fuelled by a growing network of flights, including direct routes between New Delhi and Phnom Penh and Kolkata and Siem Reap. Specialised charter flights between Phnom Penh and Gaya are also being optimised to cater specifically to Buddhist pilgrims.

Officials are also broadening the tourism agenda beyond religious travel. India’s “Golden Triangle” (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur) along with Himalayan destinations are being promoted to Cambodian travellers for medical tourism, wellness retreats, and adventure experiences.

The meeting concluded with both sides pledging to streamline procedures, reduce bureaucratic barriers, and strengthen public–private collaboration. By leveraging their shared heritage, Cambodia and India are positioning their historic ties as a catalyst for sustained tourism growth and deeper economic cooperation.
