(Washington): Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Cambodian Prime Minister, had a discussion with Christopher Landau, US Deputy Secretary of State, on the afternoon of 19 February during his visit to Washington, D.C., to attend the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace.
During the meeting, the deputy secretary thanked Cambodia for joining as a founding member of the Board of Peace and highly valued the prime minister’s participation in the inaugural session. He conveyed that Donald J. Trump takes pride in contributing to the cessation of fighting between Cambodia and Thailand.
The deputy secretary further emphasized that the United States clearly understands the value of peace for Cambodia and will continue to work closely with relevant parties to ensure lasting peace along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
Within the framework of bilateral relations, the US deputy secretary commended the growing progress in US–Cambodia bilateral partnership. He also highlighted new opportunities to further strengthen ties, particularly in the trade and economic sectors.
He also expressed appreciation for Air Cambodia’s recent purchase of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from the United States.
Acknowledging Cambodia’s rapid socio-economic growth, he noted that the United States will continue exploring additional avenues to strengthen economic partnership between the two countries.
In response, Samdech Thipadei expressed gratitude for longstanding US assistance, which has supported Cambodia’s post-conflict reconstruction and development. He welcomed the steady progress in bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, defense, and security.
He also thanked President Donald J. Trump for his continued engagement in supporting the Cambodia–Thailand peace process and requested sustained US support for maintaining peace along the shared border.
Samdech Thipadei also briefed the deputy secretary on the latest developments on the ground along the Cambodia–Thailand border and reaffirmed Cambodia’s position to resolve border issues peacefully, based on international law, conventions, treaties, and agreements between the two countries.
In conclusion, Samdech Thipadei and the deputy secretary discussed further measures to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation in trade and economic sectors, security and defense, combating transnational crime, as well as cooperation within regional and international frameworks.
