(Phnom Penh): General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, affirmed that the Philippines, as ASEAN Chair in 2026, stands ready to continue leading the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) to support the peaceful resolution of the Cambodia–Thailand border issue.
He said during a courtesy call on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Thursday (Feb. 12).
During the meeting, General Brawner thanked the prime minister for the meeting and reaffirmed the strong and longstanding ties between the two nations, particularly in military-to-military cooperation. He stressed Manila’s commitment to further enhancing defence collaboration.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed the Philippine delegation and expressed satisfaction with the progress in bilateral defence cooperation, notably in experience-sharing and capacity-building among the armed forces. He also conveyed hope for broader cooperation across the army, navy, and air force.
Regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border situation, the prime minister briefed the delegation on the latest developments and reiterated Cambodia’s firm commitment to a peaceful settlement based on bilateral agreements, existing conventions and treaties, and international law.
Samdech Thipadei also highly valued the role of the ASEAN Observer Team and expressed confidence that under the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship, the AOT would continue contributing to peace and stability.
General Brawner affirmed that the Philippines has closely monitored developments and is fully prepared to lead the AOT in a neutral and constructive manner to promote lasting peace for both countries and the wider region.
