(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for public understanding, noting that while the Royal Government cannot disclose specific methods for resolving the territorial dispute with Thailand, it is working diligently and responsibly to address the issue.

The premier spoke on Tuesday (Feb. 10) during a meeting with Grade A high school students at OCIC in Chroy Changvar, Phnom Penh.

“Regarding the resolution of border issues, there are differing perspectives, approaches, and understandings,” he said. “What I wish to reaffirm is that the Royal Government continues to work seriously on this matter, even though at times we are unable to make our efforts public. Therefore, I ask for public understanding.”

Samdech Thipadei noted that reactions on social media can shift rapidly within minutes, often driven by emotion. In contrast, he stressed that government decisions are made with careful consideration and thorough assessment, taking into account territorial integrity, the safety of citizens, and the well-being of the armed forces.

Acknowledging the deep pain caused by the Cambodia–Thailand territorial dispute, Samdech Thipadei emphasized that such challenges must not weaken the nation. Instead, he said, they should be transformed into strength, reiterating that no one can help Cambodia more than Cambodians themselves.

At the same time, Samdech Thipadei reaffirmed that the Cambodia–Thailand border is an internationally recognized boundary between two sovereign states, protected under international law, particularly the Charter of the United Nations. He added that the Royal Government of Cambodia remains firmly committed, now and in the future, to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity through lawful means, while categorically rejecting any attempt to alter borders or seize territory through force.

The premier reaffirmed that the Royal Government will always choose approaches that defend sovereignty while avoiding destruction and suffering for the people.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei expressed his gratitude to heroic soldiers defending the nation’s territory and to Cambodian citizens for their unity and solidarity during times of armed aggression, reflecting a strong spirit of national cohesion.
