(Banteay Meanchey): On 8 February 2026, Hugo Trismann, Ambassador of the European Union to Cambodia, assured displaced Cambodian families sheltering at Kandol Pagoda in Banteay Meanchey Province that they are not alone, affirming that the European Union will continue to stand with them.

The assurance was delivered during a humanitarian visit in which the ambassador led a delegation to provide emergency assistance to families displaced from the Boeung Trakuon area in Kok Romiet Commune, Thma Puok District.

The visit was attended by Dith Tina, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; Um Reatrey, Governor of Banteay Meanchey Province; Anirban Chatterjee, Deputy Representative of UNICEF Cambodia, along with other officials and partner organizations.

Speaking to Fresh News, the EU ambassador acknowledged that while the EU cannot meet all needs in full, it will continue to provide support within its capacity to ease the suffering of displaced communities.

“Beyond the assistance we are providing today, the key message I want to convey to the affected families and the Cambodian people is that they are not alone,” he said. “The European Union will remain here to support and assist them now and in the future.”

According to reports, more than 2,700 families in Banteay Meanchey Province remain displaced and unable to return to their homes. The displacement followed the installation of barbed wire and container barriers by Thai military forces, blocking access roads to residential areas in six villages: Prey Chan, Chouk Chey, Phlov Bambaek, Samakki Meanchey, Banteay Mean Rith, and Trapeang Samrong. Local residents and authorities stated that the barriers were erected after the ceasefire agreement took effect on 27 December 2025.
