(Phnom Penh): Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), and Thongloun Sisoulith, General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP), jointly expressed satisfaction with the cooperation between the two countries, agreeing that peace along the border genuinely reflects strong friendship and effective cooperation.
The remarks were made following the co-chairing by Samdech Techo Hun Sen and General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith of the 16th Summit Meeting between the CPP and the LPRP.
Chea Thyrith, CPP spokesperson, told reporters that during the meeting, the two parties held discussions and exchanged views on party-to-party cooperation, focusing on the implementation of agreements reached during the previous meeting in Viet Nam in 2025.
These agreements have continued to be implemented into 2026, yielding numerous achievements that have contributed to the expansion of bilateral relations between the CPP and the LPRP, as well as trilateral party cooperation among the CPP, the Communist Party of Viet Nam, and the LPRP.
The spokesperson underlined that within the framework of bilateral party cooperation, the top leadership highlighted the potential for further expanding cooperation between the two parties. Particular emphasis was placed on continuing exchanges between youth and leadership of both countries through high-level visits, as well as exchanges and training for young successors. These efforts aim to preserve and further strengthen the close and enduring friendship between the two parties.
On the occasion, Thongloun Sisoulith expressed profound gratitude to the CPP, the Royal Government of Cambodia, and the Cambodian people for their consistent support and assistance to Laos and the Lao people.
This support reflects the spirit of solidarity and closeness between the two neighboring countries. Maintaining such good relations, he said, has been a core element of bilateral ties, not only at the party level, but also across governments, legislative institutions, and the private sector over the years.
According to the spokesperson, Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Thongloun Sisoulith agreed that, in addition to strengthening party relations, both governments should further promote bilateral relations in connection with milestone anniversaries in 2026, when the two countries will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their relations. Leaders of both sides agreed to jointly organize major events to mark the occasion, with Thongloun Sisoulith proposing the organization of cultural days to further promote and celebrate Cambodia–Laos relations.
In addition, the two parties discussed cooperation in trade, economic, and broader development sectors, with a view to supporting progress for both parties and governments.
The leaders additionally addressed safety and security along the border. Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Thongloun Sisoulith, and the prime ministers of both countries expressed satisfaction that Cambodia and Laos enjoy peaceful borders, which reflect mutual friendship, good cooperation, and mutual understanding. Chea Thyrith added that the Cambodia–Laos border demarcation has been completed by approximately 86 percent, with only 14 percent remaining. He underlined that the summit focused on resolving any issues peacefully, should they develop, and on further expanding border cooperation to ensure sustainability and stability along the shared border.
At the same time, both governments supported efforts to further enhance trade relations between Cambodia and Laos. Although current bilateral trade stands at around USD 250 million, the top leadership of both parties and governments believe there remains significant potential for further expansion.
Spokesperson Chea Thyrith added that the initial goal of both countries is to increase bilateral trade to approximately USD 700 million in the near future, demonstrating strong political will and close coordination between the parties and governments of the two nations.
