(Phnom Penh): Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra received Flavio Bonetti, the newly appointed Representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to Cambodia, for a courtesy call and working discussion on Thursday morning (Feb. 5) at the Ministry of Information.
The meeting aimed to strengthen and expand cooperation in developing Cambodia’s information and media sector.
During the discussion, both sides discussed key areas of collaboration, including enhancing journalists’ professional capacity through training programs, experience sharing, promotion of professional journalism standards, journalists’ safety, and the development of rules and regulations to ensure compliance with journalistic ethics and professional codes of conduct.
Minister Neth Pheaktra underlined that under the 7th mandate, one of the Ministry’s top priorities is the drafting of the Law on the Press Regime, which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. He requested UNESCO’s support and expertise to assist in the drafting process and ensure the law is finalized on schedule.
On the occasion, the minister also congratulated Flavio Bonetti on his appointment as the new UNESCO Representative to Cambodia and wished him success in further strengthening close cooperation between the ministry and UNESCO.
For his part, Flavio Bonetti expressed his pleasure at taking up his new mission in Cambodia, noting that it marks an important step in enhancing relations and cooperation between UNESCO and the Ministry of Information. He reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to supporting the advancement of Cambodia’s media sector toward higher quality, professionalism, and modernity.
