(Phnom Penh): The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training reminded factory owners and enterprise directors nationwide to strengthen occupational safety and health measures to protect workers amid rising temperatures.
Speaking on Monday (Feb. 2), the ministry spokesperson, Sun Mesa said the reminder reflects the concern of Heng Sour, Minister of Labour and Vocational Training, for the well-being of workers as well as the sustainable operations of factories and enterprises during the hot season.
“This reflects the minister’s consideration for workers and the interests of enterprises to ensure that workplaces remain safe, healthy, and productive as temperatures increase,” he said. “At the same time, experts from the ministry continue to closely monitor workplace conditions and support both workers and enterprises.”
The spokeperson outlined several key measures that enterprises should implement during the summer period. These include regularly inspecting and maintaining ventilation systems, switching them on at least one hour before work begins, and ensuring adequate airflow by opening windows and doors or installing exhaust fans where necessary.
He also stressed the importance of storing materials and equipment in an orderly and safe manner.
In addition, enterprises are required to provide sufficient clean drinking water and encourage workers to hydrate frequently and wear clothing suitable for hot weather conditions.
He recommended alternative measures include spraying water on factory rooftops at least twice daily to reduce heat, assigning staff to regularly monitor workplace temperatures, and increasing education and awareness on health protection measures.
These messages should be communicated to workers through internal voice notification systems.
The ministry spokeperson added that in urgent situations, enterprise owners, managers, and workers may contact the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training via the hotlines 1286 or 1297, reach out to relevant authorities, or submit complaints through the ministry’s anonymous complaint system to assess potential health and safety risks during periods of extreme heat.
