(Phnom Penh): In a landmark decision, Cambodia has officially signed an agreement to host the 5th Asian Youth Games in 2031 (AYG-2031). The decision received approval in principle from Prime Minister Hun Manet, paving the way for Cambodia to stage the continental multi-sport youth event.
The signing ceremony was held on the morning of Jan. 26, 2026, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It was attended by Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General and high representative of Senior Minister Thong Khon and President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, alongside Seng Vanna, Deputy Governor representing Phnom Penh Capital Governor Khuong Sreng. Also present was Timothy Fox, Acting President of the Olympic Council of Asia.
During the ceremony, Vath Chamroeun remarked, “This contract serves as a standard operational mechanism for organising the AYG-2031 multi-sport youth event. It clearly defines the responsibilities between the rights holder and the host, in accordance with international sports regulations. We are committed to ensuring that the Games are organised and conducted smoothly, efficiently, and successfully for the Olympic members of all 45 participating countries.”
As the host nation, Cambodia has vowed to take every necessary step to fulfil its obligations. The country aims to create a historic milestone and contribute to the celebration of Cambodia's achievement in becoming an upper-middle-income country by the year 2030.
The statement concluded with a strong sense of optimism, affirming that the Royal Government and the people of Cambodia are determined to make 2031 a remarkable year for the nation.
