(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Information Minister Neth Pheaktra highlighted that on 2 and 3 January 2026, international media outlets widely reported that Thai armed forces had violated Cambodian territory after the ceasefire came into effect. These actions included placing shipping containers, installing barbed wire, and erecting national flags on Cambodian soil, while declaring the areas to be Thai territory.
The minister wrote on his social media on Sunday (Jan. 4).
He continued that the reports cited statements by Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, which clearly affirmed that Thai armed forces had encroached upon Cambodia’s territory. The continued occupation of Cambodian land by Thai troops after the ceasefire, as well as the destruction of civilian homes and infrastructure, constitutes a clear violation of fundamental principles of international law, international humanitarian law, and international human rights law.
Media reports also highlighted Thailand’s alleged plans to illegally annex certain Cambodian areas into its own territory. Articles written by Agence France-Presse (AFP) were subsequently republished and cited by numerous international media outlets, including the South China Morning Post, CNA, The Straits Times, Barron’s, Inquirer, UCA News, and WION, among others. Both traditional and new domestic media outlets also provided extensive coverage.
