(Phnom Penh): Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi, on Friday (Dec. 26), reaffirmed that Japan will continue engaging in dialogue at multiple levels with both Cambodia and Thailand to help achieve a peaceful resolution and reduce ongoing border tensions.
Referring to the recent escalation, Motegi said military clashes between the two countries have reignited, despite the start of ceasefire talks on December 24.
“Between Thailand and Cambodia, military clashes are flaring up again. Ceasefire talks have begun, but fighting is still ongoing,” he said, noting that Japan remains deeply concerned about the civilian casualties, displacement of people, and damage to civilian infrastructure.
Motegi emphasized that defence authorities from both sides are currently in consultation, and Japan hopes that dialogue will lead to the firm realization of a ceasefire.
He recalled that on December 18, during the visit of Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow to Japan, he raised the issue directly. He also noted that Senior Deputy Minister Namazu had recently been dispatched to Cambodia to meet senior officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to convey the same message.
“Japan will continue to engage in dialogue at various levels with both countries, calling for a peaceful resolution and working to help reduce tensions,” Motegi stressed.
