(Phnom Penh): The Royal Embassy of Cambodia in France has reported that European travellers transiting through Thailand have, on several occasions, encountered serious difficulties at Bangkok’s international airport, according to an announcement seen by Fresh News on Thursday (Dec. 18).

The embassy stated that it has received information indicating that European passengers in transit have been subjected to excessive and unacceptable screening procedures, including prolonged interrogations prior to boarding, unreasonable requests for proof of financial resources, and detailed verification of accommodation reservations in Cambodia.

In some cases, these measures were reportedly followed by intrusive searches and improper baggage handling, resulting in the loss of checked luggage, which was only discovered upon passengers’ arrival in Phnom Penh.

As a precautionary measure, the embassy strongly advised travellers to avoid transit routes through Thailand where possible and to consider alternative airlines offering more appropriate and favourable transit conditions for travel to the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The embassy clarified that the incidents occurred outside Cambodian territory and therefore do not fall under the responsibility of Cambodian authorities. Nevertheless, it warned that such practices may significantly undermine travellers’ overall travel experience.
