(Phnom Penh): Russian Ambassador to Cambodia Anatoly Borovik expressed deep concern over the armed clashes along the Cambodia–Thailand border involving the use of heavy weapons. He called on both sides to exercise restraint to prevent further civilian deaths and injuries and to pursue dialogue and a ceasefire in order to achieve lasting peace between the two countries.
Ambassador Anatoly Borovik spoke in a press briefing on Tuesday (Dec. 16) at the Russian Embassy.
“We express deep concern over the clashes along the Cambodia–Thailand border involving the use of heavy weapons. We urge both sides to exercise restraint to avoid further civilian deaths and injuries and to seek dialogue in order to reach a ceasefire for long-term peace between the two countries, in accordance with the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement. We support a peaceful resolution to this conflict,” the ambassador underscored.
The remarks come amid continued tensions following Thailand’s military invasion of Cambodian territory on 7 December 2025. Cambodia has welcomed proposals from the international community to resolve the situation through peaceful and diplomatic means, while the Thai side has rejected those initiatives.
Thailand’s armed aggression against Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity has resulted in serious humanitarian consequences. Thai forces have used heavy weapons, including fighter jets dropping bombs, targeting both military positions and civilian areas.
As of 2:00 p.m. on 15 December 2025, Thai military attacks had caused 15 Cambodian civilian deaths, 73 injuries, and the displacement of 409,293 people, including more than 127,000 children who fled their homes and schools with their families.
