(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen has advised suspending all cross-border travel between Cambodian and Thai citizens, citing Thailand’s military invasion, attacks, and indiscriminate killing of civilians.

In a message posted on his social media on Saturday (Dec. 13), Samdech Techo wrote:

“Dear fellow compatriots,

In recent days, Thai military forces have invaded, attacked, and killed Cambodian people indiscriminately, without distinguishing between targets or locations. Even bridges, roads, schools, and pagodas have been destroyed using heavy artillery and aircraft. Toxic smoke from cluster munitions has been used in many areas, including locations where Thai citizens are living and working within Cambodian territory.

Under these circumstances, in my capacity as President of the Senate, Chairman of the Supreme Advisory Council to the King, and President of the ruling party, I respectfully advise the prime minister and the Royal Government to consider suspending all cross-border travel between Cambodian and Thai people.

Cambodian citizens currently in Thailand should continue to live and work in Thailand, while Thai citizens living and working in Cambodia should remain in Cambodia until a full ceasefire is implemented.

This measure is intended to ensure the safety of Cambodian and Thai people and to prevent danger during travel, particularly when crossing the border. I kindly ask Cambodian citizens residing in Thailand and Thai citizens to understand this necessity. I also call on the Royal Government of Cambodia to help protect the safety of Thai citizens living in Cambodia so that they do not become victims of gunfire, bombs, or toxic smoke resulting from Thailand’s actions.”
