(Phnom Penh): Keo Ramy, President of Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC), raised grave concern over UNESCO’s troubling silence in the face of repeated destruction of World Heritage property caused by Thai military aggression.

In a statement posted to his social media on 11 December, Keo Ramy wrote:

"UNESCO has 194 member states. In previous mandates, UNESCO’s leaders were not only experts in their fields, but also deeply committed to protecting ancient temples, national heritage, and World Heritage sites. Whenever internal conflicts or disputes between countries arose, UNESCO consistently issued statements to safeguard and prevent any harm that might threaten humanity’s cultural treasures.

Yet today, despite repeated damage to World Heritage property caused by Thai soldiers—from the first act of aggression until now—no experts or any relevant international institutions have stepped forward to stop or condemn these destructive acts. The stones crafted by our Khmer ancestors are crying out in pain, calling for help to save them from the barbaric aggressors who threaten this precious heritage."
