(Phnom Penh): Cambodia’s Defence Ministry has denied Thai military claims that a landmine explosion occurred near the border this week and rejected accusations that Cambodian forces planted the device.

In a statement, the ministry spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata said Thailand’s 2nd Army Area alleged a landmine blast took place in the Huai Tamaria area at 2:20 p.m. on 2 December 2025 and blamed Cambodia, but Cambodian Military Region 4 reported hearing no such explosion at that time. The ministry said the allegation was an attempt to mislead the international community and justify what it described as Thai efforts to encroach on Cambodian territory.

Cambodia underscored that since joining the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines, it has not laid new mines and remains committed to international obligations on human safety. It called on Thailand to stop using what it says is false information about landmines as a pretext for violating Cambodia’s sovereignty.

The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to the Joint Declaration on Peace between Cambodia and Thailand, signed on 26 October 2025, particularly with regard to preventing fake or false information in order to de-escalate tensions and foster a conducive environment for maintaining peace and stability between the two countries.

The statement urged the public and journalists, both domestic and international, to stay informed about developments in the situation.
