(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen called on Cambodians to avoid rash or extreme reactions toward products linked to Thailand, stressing that goods manufactured inside Cambodia, regardless of the investor’s nationality, should be treated as Cambodian products.
Samdech Techo spoke on Monday (Nov. 17) during the 33rd National Congress of Buddhist Monks at the National Institute of Education.
“I would like to clarify: do not act rashly to the point that Thai investors refuse to produce goods in Cambodia. That would be wrong. Goods made in Cambodia are considered Cambodian products,” he said.
He provided the example of PTT fuel stations, noting that although the brand originates from Thailand, the fuel sold in Cambodia is sourced from Singapore and Malaysia, not Thailand. “PTT fuel is not imported from Thailand every day; it comes from Singapore and Malaysia. There is no need to boycott,” he added.
In this context, Samdech Techo reminded the public that targeting Thai-owned companies operating in Cambodia could harm the national economy. He also warned that extreme actions could damage Cambodia’s economic interests, deter investment, and undermine local production capacity. He encouraged citizens not to reject products simply based on the origin of the company.
He cited CP’s poultry and egg production, K. Cement’s manufacturing operations, and PTT fuel stations as examples of goods produced within Cambodia that should be supported as domestic products.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen urged all Cambodians to remain balanced, avoid extremist behaviour, and continue supporting locally produced goods to ensure economic growth and long-term investment stability.
