(Phnom Penh): Cambodia’s leading telecommunications operator Smart Axiata, in collaboration with Huawei, has successfully completed the large-scale deployment of 2.3GHz EasyAAU across several key urban areas nationwide. This network upgrade marks a significant step in the evolution from traditional nTnR architecture to a green and high-efficiency Massive MIMO (MM) network. It effectively addresses both capacity and user experience bottlenecks, further strengthening Smart’s leadership in mobile network speeds. By continuously increasing investment in network infrastructure, Smart is actively advancing its digital strategy and providing essential support for the development of a digital society in Cambodia.
Innovation-Driven, Redefining the Network Experience
Smart has long been at the forefront of digital infrastructure development and inclusive technology in Cambodia, earning its reputation as a national leader in telecom innovation. The company has pioneered multiple industry firsts — in 2014, Smart became the first operator in Cambodia to launch 4G LTE services, followed by the commercial rollout of high definition voice services via VoLTE, and was also the first to introduce Massive MIMO technology in the country. Through continuous innovation, Smart has built a widely available and highly reliable 4G network with seamless nationwide coverage.
As Cambodia’s national digital strategy advances, smartphone adoption continues to rise, and data plans become increasingly affordable. This shift has led to a surge in video consumption and user-generated content uploads via mobile devices, resulting in sustained high growth in mobile data traffic. In several densely populated urban centers, Smart's network has begun to experience growing capacity pressure. With 2.3GHz serving as the key capacity layer, enhancing spectrum efficiency on this band has become critical to meeting evolving user demands.
EasyAAU Innovation: Simplified Deployment, Superior Performance, and Energy Efficiency
The newly deployed 2.3GHz EasyAAU solution in this collaboration integrates multiple cutting-edge technologies, including an innovative leaf antenna design, high-precision beamforming, and the industry-leading “0 Bit 0 Watt” technology. Without compromising on performance, it delivers the industry’s lightest AAU, enabling streamlined deployment while ensuring both superior performance and energy efficiency.
According to field test data from core areas of Phnom Penh, compared with the traditional 8T8R solution, EasyAAU has achieved a major breakthrough: doubling network capacity and tripling user experience rates. This significantly enhances user perception, enabling smooth network experiences even in densely populated areas.
Moreover, the solution improves energy efficiency by 45%, aligning closely with Smart's long-standing commitment to green strategies and providing key technical support for building low-carbon, sustainable wireless networks.
Li Jie, Huawei Wireless Product Line Vice President, said that Huawei is honored to join hands with Smart Axiata to drive solution innovation and support Smart build a competitive, green, and low-carbon network.
Putting Users First and Accelerating Cambodia’s Digital Transformation
Muhammad Adeel Israr, Chief Technology and Information Officer of Smart mentioned:
"Through continuous network expansion and technology upgrades, we are able to deliver a smoother user experience, while also providing solid network support for inclusive connectivity, digital society, and smart city applications. Every investment we make in the network is a commitment to the country’s digital future."
As Cambodia moves toward a more connected and intelligent society, Smart will continue to place technological innovation at its core, building a high-quality, highly reliable digital communication network to provide sustained momentum for the country’s digital development.
