(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet extended his deepest gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as ASEAN Chair, for facilitating the peaceful resolution of the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict, which eventually led to the signing of the peace agreement between the two countries.
Cambodian Delegate Minister So Naro spoke on Tuesday (Oct. 28) during a press conference on the outcomes of Samdech Thipadei's participation in the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Malaysia.
“On behalf of Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed gratitude to the Malaysian prime minister for his direct efforts and firm commitment in assisting Cambodia and Thailand to resolve their conflict through peaceful means,” the delegate minister underscored.
He added that the premier further underlined that the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar had been crucial in the successful organisation of the Special Meeting held on 28 July 2025 in Putrajaya, co-hosted with the United States, with active participation from China. This meeting resulted in a successful ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.
Prime Minister Hun Manet also expressed appreciation to ASEAN for its valuable contribution through the deployment of the Independent Observer Team (IOT) to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire. He noted that Malaysia’s steadfast commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region had been further demonstrated through its constructive facilitation and hosting of the Quadripartite Negotiations on the peace agreement proposed by the president of the United States, which led to the signing of the Cambodia–Thailand Peace Deal on 26 October 2025.
It is noted that the Joint Declaration between Cambodia and Thailand was signed in Kuala Lumpur on the morning of 26 October 2025 by Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, witnessed by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
This agreement is a momentous and historic milestone for both Cambodia and Thailand. It reaffirms the shared belief of the two nations that peace is achievable when countries demonstrate courage and sound judgement in their pursuit of peaceful coexistence.
