(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen recalled the history of his many discussions with the late King Father Norodom Sihanouk, prior to the achievement of the Paris Peace Agreements of 23 October, which ended the conflict in Cambodia.

As a signatory of the Paris Peace Agreements, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that the first meeting between himself and the late king father took place on 2 December 1987 in Fère-en-Tardenois, France, marking the beginning of the path toward peace.

Samdech Techo spoke on Friday (Oct. 24) during the 4th Session of the 5th Legislature of the Senate.

Samdech Techo emphasised that the journey toward the signing of the peace agreements required many rounds of negotiations held in multiple locations, including France, Indonesia, Beijing, Thailand, and New York. Regardless of obstacles along the way, he never abandoned the negotiation efforts and continued pushing forward for peace.

He also highlighted the important roles played by two individuals who significantly contributed to Cambodia’s peace process: Pung Chhiv Kek and Samdech Norodom Ranariddh, who served as key intermediaries.

“Mountains cannot meet, but people can meet if there is will. The meeting on 2 December at Fère-en-Tardenois, which many refer to today, was the true beginning of the peace journey. It did not start only on 23 October. I would like to reaffirm this clearly,” Samdech Techo underscored.

Samdech Hun Sen shared this historical reflection during the 4th Session of the 5th Legislature of the Senate on 24 October 2025, which he presided over.

The Senate president further stated that once the Paris Peace Agreements were signed, the Royal Government of Cambodia, with Samdech as Prime Minister, had the full responsibility to ensure the accommodation and security of all participating parties involved in the implementation of the Agreements.
